A while ago, Poplar HARCA took the decision in light of Grenfell, and stringent fire safety issues to remove sheds from ground floor flats on the Burdett Estate, starting with Maydwell House.
After protests from residents and Labour candidates and Councillors, Poplar HARCA agreed to stop further removals and review its policies.
Poplar HARCA have stated that they would like to regularise residents having sheds on the Burdett Estate through a licensing arrangement. Their intention now is to proceed with contacting residents in the area and seeing who would like to take up the offer of a license. They will also be contacting those residents who originally had their sheds demolished or removed and offering to replace them which we will cover the costs for.
In a meeting with Poplar HARCA, Cllr David Edgar and I did raise concerns about the documents and the process being complicated for residents, and asked if a simpler solution could be found.
If any residents do have any issue please contact me, or the other Labour Councillors in Mile End.
Please find below copy of the licensing agreement:
Nice one! Councillors’ and residents’ campaigning looks to have been very successful.
Well done!
