It has been a year since I have been elected as a Ward Councillor by the people of Mile End Ward. The campaign was tough and opposition came from, let’s say ‘unexpected quarters’. Since elected I have regularly carried out twice weekly surgeries (an average of 8 per month) leading to 245 individual members enquiries with regards to various cases on the ward.

Below are a highlight of my activities over the year:

July 2018

On the 11th of July 2018, at full council, I first tabled a question on behalf of the Altab Ali Trust, asking for the bus stop in front of the Altab Ali Park bus stop to be renamed after Altab Ali, to mark the 40th anniversary of his racist murder. Subsequently in the year, the bus stop was renamed by TFL.

With Md Rafiqullah from the Altab Ali Trust discussing the proposed question.

Also, with campaigners objected to the proposed redevelopment of Chrisp Street Market

October 2018

Took part in two successful call in to ask the Mayor to reconsider his decision with regards to the closure of the Local Authority Day Nurseries and reverse the decision to privatise the Tower Hamlets Community Equipment Service.

Vote by the Overview and Scrutiny Committee asking the Mayor to reconsider his decision to close the remaining three Local Authority Day Nurseries (LADN)

January 2019

Successfully campaigned with residents to get reversed the proposed reduction in residents parking bays on Thomas Road.

February 2019

Joined with campaigners to put a halt to the Medium Term Financial Strategy (MTFS) proposed for the Community Language Service (CLS), which would have meant the dismantling of the service.

Parents and campaigners outside the Town Hall on Budget Day, asking the Council to reconsider its decision to dismantle the Community Language Service.

March 2019
Helped draft and was one of two councillors to propose a motion in full council, and get it unanimously passed, that Tower Hamlets Council adopt the All Party Parliamentary Groups Definition of Islamophobia.

Its been a topsy turvey year, unpredictable, but fun, as the Pesian Poet Jami said:

“The Naqshbandiyya are strange caravan leaders

Who bring the caravan through hidden paths into the sacred sanctuary”
